Some villages have a soul and capture our heart from the word go. In Val d’Isere, every street is loaded with history..
Once upon a time, Val d’Isere was born…
The story began in 1888 with the opening of the first hotel in Val d’Isere. From 1930 onwards, skiing became popular and Val d’Isere was immediately the destination of choice. The post-war period marked the advent of winter sports and Val d’Isere became an internationally renowned resort thanks to its unique ski area and the authentic charm of its village.
Savoy’s traditional architecture features local stone, wood, metal and lauze (stone roof tiles), a harmonious blend of raw materials creating a wonderful palette of colours. Although the wooden chalet is the most well known rural dwelling, Avalin architecture is replete with a variety of different structures. Today, Val d’Isere includes a variety of traditional dwellings ; a tasteful blend of tradition and modernity. Numerous chalets may be found in the different hamlets of the resort (Le Joseray, Le Fornet, Le Cret…)
