Excursions

CASTEL DEL MONTE* AND THE BASILICA OF ST. NICHOLAS

An unmissable opportunity to see two of the most precious jewels of Italian architecture, the Basilica of St. Nicholas in Bari and the Castel del Monte, in one excursion, retracing the events that have left a mark on the history of these fascinating, mysterious places.

What we will see

  • Basilica of St. Nicholas
  • Castel del Monte

What we will do

Our excursion, which includes a visit to two of the finest examples of Italian architecture, starts at the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, which was built in the Apulian Romanesque style during the Norman domination. It is here that the relics of the city's famous patron saint are preserved. Its construction dates back to the year 1087 AD when, following the legendary expedition of 62 sailors from Bari to Myra, the sacred relics of Saint Nicholas were brought to the city.
We then proceed by coach to the second destination of our excursion: Castel del Monte, the symbol par excellence of the melting pot of artists and scholars of many different nationalities and races that were hosted at the court of Frederick II of Swabia. The castle, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is traditionally believed to have been built around 1240. It lay abandoned for centuries until 1876 when it became a place of great interest to experts of history of art and astronomy, scientists and architects, who even today are amazed by the perfection of a mathematically imperfect structure.
The building has an octagonal plan with a 24-metre high octagonal tower at each corner. The interior is divided into two floors that are raised with respect to the forecourt. Observing the building in detail, it is amazing to note that not one of the façades of the internal octagonal courtyard is the same as any other, yet the beauty and harmony of the building as a whole is quite beguiling. The castle was built from three main materials (limestone, white marble and breccia corallina, a type of sedimentary rock with a pink hue), which are carefully distributed to produce the right chromatic effect.

A STROLL IN BARI AND A PANORAMIC TRAIN TOUR

This tour will allow us to visit the heart of Bari were we explore by foot and travel on a small tourist city train.

What we will see

  • Old Town of Bari: The Basilica of St. Nicholas
  • Castello Norman -svevo (exterior visit)
  • The new City

What we will do

This tour allows us to visit the beautiful old town of Bari and its hidden "gems": we will start from the Basilica of St. Nicholas, built in a classic Apulia Romanesque style during the Norman domination, and in which the renowned relics of the Saint are kept, patron of city, and the Cathedral
The tour continues following the road of the Orecchiette to the famous Norman Castel, (an exterior visit) a symbol fortification of Bari and ancient defensive bulwark of the Old City. Built by the Normans in the twelfth century, destroyed in 1156 and then rebuilt by Frederick II between 1233 and 1240, the manor is one of the most interesting forts in the region, especially thanks to its strategic location. Fascinating testimony of the medieval building, the castle has numerous enhancements attributable to later ages and today inside it are regularly organized festivals and exhibitions.
Leaving the old part, we will resume on train to reach Piazza Ferrarese, and continue on foot to the infamous Column where we will have some free time.
We will resume the train for a brief overview of Bari seafront, dotted with palaces from the thirties;
Return by ship via shuttle bus.

ITALY'S HIDDEN TREASURES - LOCOROTONDO

Awarded the Orange Flag by Italy's Touring Club for its beautiful shape and the convenience of the historic centre, the ancient heart of Locorotondo unfolds in a string of picturesque views, which we will discover on a pleasant stroll in complete freedom.

What we will see

  • Murge Plateau
  • Locorotondo
  • Free time to walk around the historic centre
  • Cummerse
  • Wine tasting (optional)

What we will do

We will leave the port of Bari and head south towards Murge, the karst square-shaped plateau in central Puglia.
Our destination is the town of Locorotondo, a whitewashed town in a distinctive circular shape which gave it its name.
When we reach our destination, we will be free to explore the historic centre, a unique monument oozing charm and character with its whitewashed cottages, cobbled streets, elegant portals and balconies brimming with flowers.
Along with the famous huts called "trulli" that are typical in Locorotondo, there are also the so-called "cummerse": small whitewashed houses in an even geometric shape with a pitched roof, which have been renovated and opened up to tourists for accommodation in the area.
As well as admiring the architecture and picturesque panoramic views on our walk, we can also stop and enjoy a taste of the excellent DOC white wine produced locally in the heart of Itria Valley where Locorotondo lies.

Excursions

PREMIUM TOUR: ACROPOLIS, THE BIRTHPLACE OF GREEK CIVILISATION

Upland which brings together all the majesty of Ancient Greece: this is Acropolis, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will be left spellbound by the majestic temples, testimony to a glorious past, to then admire the modern city from above: a unique and unmissable opportunity.

What we will see

  • Acropolis
  • Temple of Athena Nike
  • Erechtheion
  • Parthenon
  • Modern city (from above)

What we will do

We set off from the port of Pireo and head towards our destination: Acropolis, the largest ancient complex in the Western world. Located at the heart of an ancient plain, the Acropolis stands on upland and presents architectural marvels of rare beauty. The upland was in actual fact a suitable place to build a high, fortified city, firstly a stronghold for the Kings of Athens and base of the most ancient sanctuaries. Having become the religious centre of ancient Athens, Acropolis owes its magnificence to the period under Pericles which made it a monument dedicated to Greek civilisation.
Our guide will present us with the marvellous Temple of Athena Nike, dating back to 427-424 a.C., to commemorate the victory of the people of Athens over the Persians.
We continue our visit with another delight: Erechtheion. Built in the most religious part of Acropolis, this temple is dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. We are able to take photos of the extraordinary caryatids which adorn the southern portico of the temple.
We will end the visit perfectly by admiring the Parthenon, a magnificent and perfect architectural work. We will carry this image of the world’s most famous temple with us forever. Built in 447 BC and dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos in 438 BC, it has been used over the centuries as a church, mosque and arsenal and is still a symbol of the city of Athens, and perhaps, without any exaggeration, it can be considered the greatest symbol of our civilisation.
We can wave goodbye to Athens from above, with a breath-taking, panoramic visit.

AMIDST MYTH AND HISTORY: ATHENS AND CAPE SOUNIO

An excursion through myths, history and art: from the Acropolis, the sacred city of ancient Athens that is home to archaeological remains of rare beauty, to Cape Sounio, a picturesque promontory that commands magnificent views of the stunning ruins of the Temple of Poseidon.

What we will see

  • Acropolis
  • Cape Sounio, Temple of Poseidon

What we will do

We travel by coach to the first stop on our excursion: the majestic Acropolis, which dominates the city of Athens and attracts millions of tourists every year. We immerse ourselves in the evocative atmosphere of the monuments that bear witness to the glorious past of Ancient Greece.
At lunchtime, we stop at a hotel for a lovely meal before continuing our tour to one of the true wonders of Greece: Cape Sounio. We arrive at the Attic headland that is home to the wonderful Temple of Poseidon, built under the direction of Pericles in honour of the god of the sea. According to the myth, Aegeas, king of Athens and father of Theseus, is said to have thrown himself into the sea, thereby giving the sea its name. The temple commands stunning views of the Saronic Gulf and the Cyclades: a feast for the eyes and the soul!

THE CANAL AND ANCIENT CORINTH

A unique opportunity to admire the great Corinth Canal, an idea which dates back to the times of the Roman which was developed up until the nineteenth century, and the remains of ancient Corinth which stuns with the famous Apollo Temple.

What we will see

  • Corinth Canal
  • Ancient Corinth

What we will do

We will leave the port and by coach, arrive at the Corinth Canal: it is 6 kilometres long, 23 metres wide and 8 metres deep, with sloping sides that reach 80 metres in height. The idea of building a canal to cut across the isthmus linking the Ionian and Aegean seas dates back to Roman times, when Emperor Nero ordered the first excavations using silver shovels and Jewish slaves. It was only in 1881 that technology was good enough to "cut" the isthmus.
We may get lucky and see a ship passing through the strait: such a sighting is sensational and is definitely worthy of a photo!
We will leave the canal behind and visit Ancient Corinth, described by Saint Paul as "rich and licentious". Protected by a powerful fortress, the city had a forum which was bigger than the one in Rome, with temples, theatres, baths, fountains, shops and basilicas. Before hopping back on board the coach, we will treat ourselves to the majesty of Apollo's Temple: a splendid example of the Doric style of the 6th Century B.C.

DAY 5
Katakolon / Olympia
arrival 8:00 AM | departure 2:00 PM
This incredible ancient city was the site of the very first Olympic Games. Its magnificent ruins include athletic training areas, an expansive stadium and temples of the gods Hera and Zeus.

Excursions

THE KEY TO OLYMPIA

We will be given the key to explore Olympia at will. This is the ancient, sacred city and home to the Olympic Games dedicated to Zeus, with a priceless archaeological heritage which has earned it the recognition of UNESCO as being a World Heritage Site.

What we will see

  • Olympia
  • Archaeological excavations

What we will do

If you haven't signed up to an excursion, you can make the most of our stopover in the port of Katakolon. Our coach will take us from the port to the city of Olympia, where you will be completely free to explore at will. This ancient religious centre was the birthplace of the Olympic Games, which were held every four years in honour of Zeus to celebrate “divine peace”: during the games all hostilities ceased and all wars were suspended. An important place of worship in Ancient Greece, Olympia still preserves remains of temples, monuments, theatres and sanctuaries, which bear testimony to the pomp and ceremony of the past.

EXCAVATIONS OF OLYMPIA AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

A journey back in time to the ancient, sacred city of Olympia for you to relive its history and appreciate its priceless archaeological treasures.

What we will see

  • Olympia and its archaeological excavations
  • Archaeological Museum of Olympia

What we will do

We will leave the port behind us to discover ancient Olympia, the sacred city of the Peloponnese, which stands at the foot of the gentle slopes of Mount Kronian. You'll find it hard not to be moved by such an impressive place. We will tour the excavations, begun by the Germans in 1875 and as yet ongoing, where we will be able to admire the sanctuary which housed a wonderful complex of monuments within the sacred enclosure (Altis), including the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera (where the Olympic torch-lighting ceremony is held), the Gymnasium, the Palestra and the Stadium. The temple dedicated to Zeus is the most famous: it contained the statue of the deity by Phaedias, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Let's continue our itinerary to admire one of the most beautiful collections in Greece, preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. We will marvel at the finds from Ancient Greece, at the splendid metopes from the Temple of Zeus and the Nike of Peonius, to end in style with the splendid statue of Hermes with Dionysus, the masterpiece by Praxiteles discovered in the Temple of Hera.

A SOUVENIR FROM ANCIENT OLYMPIA

What better way to create the perfect alchemy between the origins of history, the ethics of sport at its very beginnings, ancient culture, the great classical myths and the modern world? Our excursion will offer us a chance to get to know all these aspects in one single place: Olympia.

What we will see

  • Ancient Olympia: archaeological excavations and ancient squares
  • Modern Olympia

What we will do

In Olympia a guide awaits us who will lead us in our discovery of this ancient sacred city, full of temples, monuments, priests' houses, athletes' homes and public buildings. A gem set in a valley crossed by the River Alfios in the north-west Peloponnese, the city held the famous Olympic Games in honour of Zeus every four years. Here in 776 BC, a list of winners was drawn up for the first time, presumably the results of the very first Olympics in history.
As we stroll around ancient Olympia amongst the archaeological excavations, it feels as though we can still hear the spectators shouting to encourage the athletes and breathe the festive atmosphere which accompanied those 5, very long days, during which the best athletes challenged each other in the various sports: wrestling matches, charriot and horse races, the pentathlon and pankration (a primitive form of boxing). Let's delve into the past and discover the little secrets of the competition, which was first accessible only for male athletes of Greek origin and was later opened up to young Romans. Perhaps not everyone knows that women and slaves were banned from the town, the sanctuaries and the terraces, at the risk of a terrible death by being thrown from a nearby cliff.
Then, we will stop in the ancient squares, where traders and citizens once met to carry out their business.
At the end of our guided tour, we have to wake up from the spell of the past and return to reality if we're not to miss the chance of discovering the streets of modern Olympia. We can taste a typical, strong, Greek coffee, savour a cool glass of Ouzo or, if we wish, pick up a souvenir to remind us back home of a piece of history which, for a few intensely emotional hours, made us live a dream.

DAY 6
Kotor
Arrival 2:00 PM | departure 9:00 PM
Kotor is dramatically beautiful. Set between magnificent mountains and a serene bay, the city is surrounded by walls built in the 9th century. From within, Kotor is a maze of winding streets filled with boutiques, churches, bars and restaurants. Take a stroll through the city centre and discover the hidden piazzas.

Excursions

WALK AROUND KOTOR

An excursion to discover Kotor, a picturesque town overlooking the crystal clear waters of Kotor Bay, and the Medieval treasures inside its ancient walls.

What we will see

  • Ancient walls
  • Old town
  • St. Tryphon Cathedral
  • Maritime Museum

What we will do

The town of Kotor, at the foot of Mount Lov_en, is located on a coastal strip in the Gulf of Kotor. The construction work on the ancient fortification walls started in the Middle Ages, in 1420 when Kotor was at the height of its splendour and was only finished in the 18th century. The walls are 15 metres high and extend for 4.5 km around the town to St. John's Castle 280 m above sea level.
In the old town, with its well-preserved medieval character, we will visit the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, built in 1166, to admire the Romanesque architecture enhanced by Byzantine elements. Inside, we observe the square pillars alternating with ancient columns between the naves and the apse.
We will then visit the Maritime Museum, which illustrates the maritime tradition of the city, consolidated between the 16th and 18th centuries, as well as recalling the most famous fleets and captains of its history.
After our guided visit, we have some free time to walk around the picturesque streets to do some shopping or relax in one of the many cafes.

BUDVA AND KOTOR: A TALE OF TWO CITIES

We walk past the ancient walls of Budva to admire the picturesque town centre and venture among the Medieval treasures of Kotor, a city that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What we will see

  • Budva: old town, ancient walls, historic centre
  • Kotor: historic centre

What we will do

After leaving the port of Kotor, we travel by coach to Budva, one of the most ancient towns of the region. According to the legend, the city was founded by Cadmus, son of Agenor, a Phoenician king. After leaving Thebes, he arrived with his chariot in the place that would later become Budva. The old city was originally located on an island which, over the centuries, became a peninsula due to the formation of a sandy isthmus connecting it to the mainland.
Surrounded by 15th-century walls, this imposing Medieval fortress is made up of towers and various access gates located along the walls.
Once inside, we stroll around the historic centre made up of a charming maze of streets, squares and monuments that is made even more interesting by the Venetian-inspired style adopted when rebuilding the city after the earthquake of 1979 in memory of Venetian domination.
On our way back, we stop to visit Kotor, a magnificent town that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and we spend some time in the historic centre, which bears clear evidence of the golden age of the city in Medieval times.

PERAST, VISIT TO "OUR LADY OF THE ROCKS" AND KOTOR

An evocative journey to discover the Baroque soul of Perast and the only artificial island in the Adriatic Sea, ending with a visit to the town of Kotor and its Medieval treasures.

What we will see

  • Perast
  • Island of "Our Lady of the Rocks"
  • Kotor: St. Tryphon Cathedral, Maritime Museum

What we will do

After a brief coach transfer, we stop to visit the picturesque town of Perast to photograph its treasures. A great maritime power that reached its apex in the 17th and 18th century, Perast is the best preserved Montenegrin Baroque city.
A boat then takes us to the artificial island of “Our Lady of the Rocks" (Gospa od Skrpjela), built around a small rock (krpjel) by the locals over the centuries using stones and parts of old sunken ships. Here we visit the church, dedicated to the Madonna, which has been defined a "true treasure trove", a testimony of the history and tradition of Perast. Before heading back, we stop to enjoy the magnificent view of the Bay of Kotor.
We then board the boat again and head towards Kotor, a picturesque city surrounded by imposing Medieval walls that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site after the earthquake of 1979.
We stroll around the streets of the historic centre and see the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, the oldest cathedral on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea which boasts a precious collection of 14th-century Venetian art.
We then visit the Maritime Museum, located in the 18th-century Grgurina palace, where we admire model ships, tools, banners, photographs and artefacts.
At the end of our guided tour, we will have some free time to wander around the city and buy some souvenirs.

DAY 7
Split
Arrival 9:00 AM | departure 5:00 PM
Split is the perfect blend between ancient and new world. This buzzing, lively city is known for its bars, incredible cuisine and fantastic shopping. It's Split's location that makes it unique; magnificent coastal mountains meet the bright turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea - a breath-taking view to behold.

Excursions

TROGIR AND SPLIT

A journey through time, walking among Roman walls, medieval residences and imposing fortifications in two destinations with a rich history.

What we will see

  • Trogir: walls, Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, bell tower
  • Split: Diocletian's Palace, Cathedral of Saint Domnius, Cathedral Treasury, Temple of Jupiter

What we will do

Our excursion begins with a visit to the medieval town of Trogir. Located on an island connected to dry land by a small bridge, it was founded as far back as the 3rd century B.C. by Greek settlers who called it Tragurion or "island of goats". We first head for the walls, extended several times over the centuries, and cross the characteristic little streets lined with stone houses, grand residences, churches and monasteries.
We then arrive at the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, which took four centuries to build. The main facade, created by local architect Radovan and completed in 1240, is considered to be a true masterpiece of medieval art. The bell tower, built in the 14th century, is 47 metres high and constructed in three different architectural styles.
At the end of our walk we'll take advantage of some free time to admire the beauties of this magnificent city that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Returning to the coach, we head for Split where a guided tour of Diocletian's Palace awaits. The imposing architectural complex situated in the heart of the old town is on the exact site of the palace built in the 4th century by the famous Roman emperor, who withdrew to live their following his abdication. Following the destruction of Solin in the 7th century refugees from the town occupied the fortified palace, thus marking the beginnings of modern-day Split, whose ancient origins date back to the Greek colony of Aspalathos (4th century BC).
Our visit continues with the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, dedicated to the city's patron saint, on the site of what was once Diocletian's mausoleum. Its interiors still retain much of the original decoration, including an arcade of refined Corinthian columns. In the cathedral we also visit the famous Cathedral Treasury which conserves a magnificent collection of artefacts, paintings and manuscripts and also holds the saint's relics.
Our last stop is at the Temple of Jupiter, originally situated opposite the cathedral, beyond the Peristyle (the square that also led to the imperial apartments). The temple of Jupiter is the only one of the three temples present in Diocletian's original palace to survive today, although it has been transformed into a baptistery. The temple's façade has been remodelled several times over the many centuries of its existence.
At the end of the guided tour we can explore the city on our own or indulge in some shopping before returning to the ship.

KRKA NATIONAL PARK

A full day of adventure amongst the natural wonders of Krka National Park with its breath-taking waterfalls and the surrounding Croatian landscapes.

What we will see

  • Krka National Park
  • Skradinski Buk Waterfalls
  • Watermills
  • Ethnographic museum

What we will do

Our excursion winds through the typical landscapes of the Karst region, whose chalky plateaux are crossed by deep canyons. The destination for this exciting journey is the Krka National Park, a protected area of around 14 hectares of land that takes the name of the river that runs through it.
Inside the park we'll be amazed by the breath-taking Skradinski Buk waterfalls. In the park there are around 400 animal species, many of which are native, such as Adriatic salmon. In the protected area, the interaction between the water and the chalky rock has led to the creation of tufa barriers and 7 travertine waterfalls, the last of which, Skradinski Buk, is the largest and best known at 400 m in width and 46 metres in height. Above this section of the river is a walkway immersed in the wood, along which the old watermills have been restored and returned to working order. Along the paths, above and below the watermills, there are countless panoramic viewpoints.
We'll visit a few watermills and the nearby ethnographic museum that displays ancient human dwellings in the park such as neolithic caves, before heading to a local restaurant for lunch.
At the end of the visit we will have some free time to enjoy the park.

VISIT TO SPLIT

A journey through time, walking between Roman walls, medieval residences and imposing fortifications in a city rich in history.

What we will see

  • Ivan Mestrovi_'s House
  • Diocletian's Palace
  • Cathedral of Saint Domnius
  • Temple of Jupiter
  • Golden Gate
  • City market
  • Free time

What we will do

The excursion begins at what was once the home of the artist Ivan Mestrovi_, now a museum, allowing us to learn more about one of the most famous Croatian sculptors of all time and admire some of his works.
We head on foot to the magnificent Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built in the ancient part of the city in the 4th century BC on the request of the emperor himself, who withdrew there following his abdication. We'll visit the building's cellars where, thanks to their perfect state of conservation, we will learn about life in the palace and all the customs of the time.
We continue towards the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, the city's patron saint, built on the remains of one of the oldest shrines in the world, Diocletian's mausoleum.
Finally, the visit takes us to the Temple of Jupiter and a few of the main monuments in Split, including the Golden Gate.
At the end of this fascinating visit we can take advantage of some free time to walk through the highly colourful city market.
